The Valley Has Opinions: Where to Find the Best Sopapillas in the San Luis Valley

Sopapillas from Nino's in Alamosa.
Local recommendations, good food, and a few opinions from the people who call the San Luis Valley home.
Ask people in the San Luis Valley where to find the best sopapillas, and you're going to get some opinions!
And really, this is the kind of research I can get behind. It involves good food, local restaurants, and probably a whole lot of honey.
This week, a question popped up in the Everything SLV Facebook group:
Where can you buy the best sopapillas made here in the Valley?
And the community had some suggestions!
I haven't personally taste-tested all of these (although that sounds like a pretty good assignment), so these aren't my rankings. They're recommendations from people who live right here in the Valley.
And if there's one thing I've learned growing up here, it's that locals usually know where to find the good stuff.
So, Where Are We Going for Sopapillas?
Oscar's | Alamosa
Oscar's made the list of community recommendations!
Located at 520 Main Street in Alamosa, this is one to add to your list the next time you're in town and craving something sweet.
Calvillo's | Alamosa
Another Alamosa restaurant that came up in the conversation was Calvillo's.
You'll find them at 400 Main Street in Alamosa.
If you've eaten here, I'd love to know whether you're ordering sopapillas after your meal or saving room for something else!
Nino's | Monte Vista
Nino's also got a shoutout, with recommendations mentioning both Alamosa and Monte Vista.
The Monte Vista location even lists sopapillas with honey or cinnamon and sugar on its online menu. There's an ice cream option, too!
Personally, I think deciding between honey and cinnamon and sugar might be the hardest part.
You can find Nino's at 118 Adams Street in Monte Vista.
Lindo Jalisco | Alamosa
Here's where the original question got even better.
The person who started the conversation came back with an update after trying Lindo Jalisco.
Their verdict? Delicious!
I love when someone asks for recommendations and then actually comes back to tell everyone how it went.
Lindo Jalisco is located at 1019 6th Street in Alamosa.
And Apparently, Some of You Make Your Own!
One of my favorite parts of the conversation was seeing people offer to make fresh sopapillas.
That's such a Valley thing, isn't it?
Someone asks where to buy something good, and before long, somebody else is offering to make it.
For this roundup, I stuck with the restaurant recommendations, but I definitely noticed those homemade offers!
Now I Have Questions...
Are you a honey person? Cinnamon and sugar? Or are you going all in with ice cream?
And more importantly, where do YOU think the best sopapillas in the San Luis Valley are?
I'd love to hear your recommendations. Maybe there's a little hole-in-the-wall restaurant we haven't mentioned yet.
One quick tip before you head out: restaurant hours and menus can change, so it's always worth checking that they're open and serving sopapillas.
There's More to Living Here Than an Address
As a fifth-generation San Luis Valley native, I love the little things that make living here special.
The local restaurants, the people behind the businesses, the places we've been going for years, and the recommendations we pass along to our neighbors.
That's what inspired The Valley Has Opinions, a new series sharing local favorites, recommendations, and conversations from around the San Luis Valley.
Because living here is about so much more than finding the right house.
Sometimes, it's just knowing where to find a really good sopapilla.
See you around the Valley!
